1. Feedback Capture Grid

For the user testing, I decided to use the Feedback-Capture Grid from Interaction Design. I think my prototype is still in its very young stage, so I wanted more feedback regarding the concept and idea of the project.

1. User-testing #1

First user-testing with 3 of my peers.

Some candid pictures. My first participant was Rosanne!! Followed by Ana and Jeong Yoon :-)

User testing — Personal Reflection

Synthesising feedback from my peers, personal thoughts from the experience

As a personal reflection, I realized that I had a lot of buzzwords when I was explaining my artefacts, and a lot of verbal explaining. In the future I will make sure to add some diagrams and sketches to show people so that its easier to understand.

Next steps

Feeling so nervous? I was presenting a work I've been nurturing and growing for the past months, encapsulated into a few words and artefacts. I wanted to make sure I got my point across and that they could get a bit of what the process was like to get to this point. Importance in filtering content? Make sure to get the headlines first and then additional info later, like thinking of the whole user-testing experience as a newspaper layout. I'm glad I was able to test it with some friends I knew well so it was a fun learning experience!!

1. User testing #2

Part 2 of my user testing! This time with a proper set up.

4 more participants!

2.Personal Observation

Sensor visibility/invisibility.

One user noted how the interaction is not intuitive. The hole on the box demands too much attention that it becomes the focus more than the object, yet if it cannot be seen, people get confused on how to interact with the object.

Gesture/Movement.

Hand movements are sometimes too fast to be able to notice the amplitude change in the audio. One user hovered their hand in the same area for a long period of time because she didn’t notice the amplitude changes based on the distance of her hand.

Synthesised Feedback

Positive feedback

Comments generally states interest in the idea of creating plastic creatures, which will be the next step of the project. The use of sound as a means to communicate about plastic pollution was met with positive responses as well, with most stating it is a unique way of comunicating a saturated topic.

Criticisms and questions

Since this is just a low-fidelity prototype and is still quite far from how the actual artefact would look like, it was met with a lot of questions or uncertainties that generally falls in this gap. Critiques were multifaceted, with some commenting on the sound quality (too small or sounding similar), one commented how the form of the prototype could be more informative of its purpose for deterence (she suggested to make them shaped like well-known poisonous specimens such as mushrooms), while another suggested exploring deeper into the materiality of the prototype in order to have a stronger connection to the topic of plastic pollution.

Moving Forward

Currently, the low-fidelity prototype performs its intended function but is still lacking in its form. Therefore I will deepen my material studies on plastic and its texure, form and sound. I will be exploring 2 approaches for the construction of the artefact; first by fusing plastic as shown previously in the document, or by creating customized plastic inflatables using vinyl sheets. For the technnology, I will be exploring various output methods alongside audio. For example, through the use of light, smell, and movement as possible outputs of the artifact.

3. Term 2 Reflection!

What do I want to achieve by Week 7 semester 2?

Can you situate your reaserach topic stand within the rest of the world?

Making peace with uncertainty

Take lead in discussion and make better preperation of questions to ask. Make more time to organize & reflect after every step both in research and making. Learn to build confidence in talking about my project. I made it a choice to try something out of my comfort zone and I have to acknowledge that there will be a lot of challenges ahead which is both scary and exciting. So far this semsester has been a bit of a chaotic mess but also a really fun learning experience to me! I often forget to enjoy the process and just stress over the outcomes more than anything. I think this term was like 15% fun and 85% stress. Something to strive for next semester would definitely to balance the fun and stress (50-50 would be amazing). It means a strong commitment and tenacity. Trust the process!! I think there are a lot of room for improvements in my design outcomes and process journal that I hope to make in the next semester. Over the winter break I will be taking steps in order to achieve this, like for example developing a cohesive branding to be adapted across all my outcomes and explore more customization possibilities for my CPJ on html. And lastly, a good chunk of my time would be to get my dissertation into a decent state by next semester. I want to finish/polish the introduction section as well as to hopefully populate the discussion section with some user testing in Jakarta.

Soft skills to improve: Speaking or presentation and time management skills

Hard skills to improve: Branding and HTML/CSS

Thank you Andreas for all the help! I'm sorry for always bombarding you with a million questions and going overtime during consultations :') I swear I'll be more time-conscious next semester haha.
