- Week 1
- Introduction
The topic of my research compendium explores interactivity in advertisements. The interaction is enabled through various means, both in digital and traditional medium. I found this topic to be quite interesting to explore with the sea of advertisments that we find ourselves in nowadays. The aim of this compendium is to analyse how ads in the past have explored interactivity, the purpose of this added feature, and the impact it has on the consumers.
Following my research compendium topic, I'm allocated into the CiD atelier! I'm excited to explore the capabilities of various technologies and the new possibilities that could be achieved through them. It is a very up-and-coming field in the design industry and I'm lucky to be able to get a taste of what its like in my last year of college!
Pages from my research compendium publication in year 2. Now looking at it again, there are definitely a couple things I would love to revisit in terms of design (the cover could've been executed differently) and the content. I felt like there was a lack of discussion on the literature and more focus on the describing the case studies themselves. This is definitely something I should note approaching the graduation project, which is to proactively try and make connections while researching. Being able to connect literature readings, case studies and personal observations
Pervasive Displays; Understanding the Future of Digital Signages
Developments in technology opens up new possibilities for advertisements and especially DOOH ( Digital Out-Of-Home) advertisements; transforming the simple medium into a complex platform for communication and interaction. Research Tools and Techniques, provides information on the popular or currently ongoing topics of research relating to digital displays, such as Social impact, audience behavior and display effectiveness and a selection of case studies.
The Design of Everyday Things
Makes visible the invisible rules that makes up a good and usable design, such as the relationship between control and function. Short Reading: Affordances and Signifiers. While affordances and signifiers are just two of Norman’s design principles, they can illustrate the flexibility of a user experience. The book’s relevance is adequately stated by the author, to which he says: “It should be no surprise that I believe they will always be just as relevant as they were twenty-five years ago, just as relevant as they are today. Why? The reason is simple. The design of technology to fit human needs and capabilities is determined by the psychology of people. Yes, technologies change, but people stay the same.”
