1.1 Class Presentation

Why interactive advertisements?

According to Forbes, the average person is exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 ads per day. Advertising has become background noise in our daily lives, and nowadays companies are fighting over communication strategies rather than focusing on their products, and interactive advertisements are becoming extremely popular among advertisers as it opens up new opportunities for marketers to reach their audience. Interactive advertisements can take many forms, including screens, billboards, which all uses technology to enable direct engagement with their audience. So far, little has been done that utilizes this technology as interactive advertisements for awareness campaigns, which I think has the potential to be very effective.

Since the nature of all awareness campaigns is to raise public visibility regarding problems or issues an organization is trying to address and to further prompt action from their audience, these campaigns often center on empathy and emotion with key audiences being the general public, and where messaging is focused almost exclusively on storytelling. In public areas or urban spaces where people are always in a rush to go places, It is easy to see how these sorts of advertisements could be largely overlooked. As such, equipped or activated using sensing technologies, interactive advertisements could potentially reach audiences in a more personalized manner.

  • 1.2 Peer presentation

We presented our research topics within our atelier.

↘ Google Experiments ↘ Create Arduino
  • Double Diamond Framework

    1.3 Class Notes

Always write & reflect. Find a niche, something new and refreshing that could say something different Curate findings for design repository

    CPJ

Website (done from scratch, don't use cargo, Wix, etc), google docs, physical journal Aim is not to design super trendy website, but have an online source that is easy to navigate.

    Research proposal

Draft in Week 7, due on Week 9 Download template, fill in current stuff and do some reflection and research Dissertation Writing: continue research proposal, take thoughts and flesh them out. Design Primer: Due sem 2 weeks 4, a proposal for practical work. Grad project: Final practical work

Experimental design: Slowly approach our work into something that has impact and value, but we start from scratch. Ideally, start with building blocks that are necessary, and start putting them together into something that has value and impact. Approaches and methods: Overarching method should be one of the frameworks recommended by Vikas. Critical journal will be discussed in the future. Andreas recommends critical journal and reflections if we are interested in creating good substantial outcomes. Dynamic outcomes have an advantage.

    To do:

Go through slides and read to narrow down the scope of your research. Set the tone of your research. Design primer could help narrow down research direction you want to take.

    2. Talk from Matthew!!

What helps for research is to read A LOT or enough so build up a suitable reading list. Know what your research so you know what to look for, find a methodology/framework to adapt into your frame work, try not to start from scratch.

Look for clarity in your terms, look for existing frame work and research and adapt though a design lens. History, production, whats been done, new methods, what goes into the process, what do indeed to know, key essential factors. Break the topic into smaller parts and from there could expand. There will be a lot of subcategories. Narrow down and take out the ones youre not interested in. Technical perspective, design perspective, etc. dont need to stay in design space, but can look at other ones also.

Writing is an organic process, if it changes every week it is fine.

Practice synthesising to look at everything from a design lens. Break down and relate to design. Bring it back to design but try not to stray too far. Effective computing: can machines have emotions, or how do people know how we feel. Link it back to practice. Reading might sound easy but it could be different when you try it, so find out why it doesnt work or why it works.

Synthesis between points. Know a little bit of everything and picking the right chain of thought. Adapt or reframe frameworks and methodologies and put them into a cultural perspective. When theory and practice come together. When you start to see various theories from readings sort of overlay and can put together. Up to you how to put it together.

Explain and define subcategories based on 1/2/3 readings. Show how they are relevant. (he had 3) Objective. Say why this concept and theory, and goal how they come together. Explain what you what to get out of the research. Because — is highly specialized, how do i use these technologies to bring the research down through a design lens. Making it clear what you want to look at, how, and why. Dont be afraid to fail? Part of learning process If it doesnt work. prove it doesnt work, switch and move on. Show that you learned something. Make time to experiment a lot and fit them into the learning process

  • Class Mindmapping Exercise

As part of the class exercise, we were each asked to make a mindmap of our topics and the branches we were considering to explore. Afterwards, everyone laid out their mindmaps and we went around looking at each other's maps and place stickers to indicate a topic area we were interested in. As for mine (above), it seems that the stickers were quite dispersed, but there were keen interest in pursuing a personalized approach towards interactive advertisements.

    3. Weekly Roundup

Feedback from Andreas after my presentation

Focus on readings from youe 3 main pillars. Testing with interactive technologies like sensors can be disappointing at first because it doesn't do what you imagined it to do, but it's important not to give up or shy away from the technicality. Remember that we aren't engineers, but we as designers have the potential to come up with stuff only designers could think of and make connections between technology, design and its contextual relevance.

Next steps is to look for more cutting edge, and current developments in the readings Look for readings on Interaction in public space, how to create awareness, advertising Look into HCI, TEA Conference paper, journals more case study
